2013-14 Curriculum List

Bible – Our Character First Bible curriculum emphasizes a different character virtue each month. We feel it is important to focus on training our children’s hearts to follow God in all that they do from a very young age. In 4th and 5th grades, students will study the Old Testament, and in middle school students will study the New Testament. Bible is also integrated into other subjects in the classroom by the teachers and brought into our science and history curriculum.

Math - Saxon Math, used in the primary grades, is a curriculum that teaches to the different styles of learning and emphasizes repetition. It includes a manipulative kit that allows students to better understand what they are doing on paper. New material is introduced and then it is reviewed throughout the remainder of the year so that what they have learned is not forgotten. Saxon includes mental math and word problems, which put math into real-life situations and help to make it meaningful. The Glencoe/McGraw-Hill math series is used in the upper grades in order to give students who are learning more difficult concepts the extra, focused practice they need to master those concepts in preparation for high school level math.

Phonics/ Reading – Primary Phonics workbooks and readers are used in PK-1st to practice sounds, teach phonograms, and apply them to reading. The Ordinary Parent’s Guide to Teaching Reading is used in K-1st grade. This curriculum is a systematic, phonetic approach to reading instruction that is very comprehensive.

Literature - Literature is incorporated in PK, K and 1st with various books chosen by the teacher. Second grade and above enjoy classical literature books that are taught as literature studies using Progeny Press and other literature guides. Some of these will be related to the history time period your child is studying that year.

Grammar/Writing - Shurley Grammar is a curriculum that teaches the mechanics of grammar from very early on. Writing skills are also learned through a systematic approach. Shurley’s writing is supplemented in the upper grades with The Institute for Excellence in Writing in order to teach excellent writing skills in a systematic way.

Spelling– Spelling Workout is a curriculum that uses word families to teach spelling and also gives important practice on other language skills such as dictionary skills and editing.

Vocabulary –Vocabulary is taught in many subjects including Literature, Science, and History. Shurley Grammar incorporates vocabulary in the lower grades, and Wordly Wise 3000 increases their vocabulary study in grades 6 and up.

Science – Science is taught from an immersion approach so that students can have an in-depth understanding of the world that God made. Science allows students to see evidence of the Word of God and the details of God. Each year, we rotate through one of the books from the Apologia curriculum. For the 2013-2014 school year, students in Kindergarten through sixth grade will be diving into Astronomy and will be given grade appropriate assignments to expand their learning. Seventh grade and above will bring their elementary years of studies together as they learn through Apologia’s General Science course.

History – In Pre-K and Kindergarten, we introduce our world, beginning with our homes and neighborhoods to understanding a larger concept of the universe. First grade and above are taught history from a chronological approach and family friendly learning environment that allows for deep, concentrated learning. For the 2013-2014 school year, student learning will focus on American History, using the America the Beautiful curriculum, which was designed to teach across multiple grades with age appropriate assignments.

Handwriting – Zaner-Bloser handwriting curriculum is used in PK-4th grade. Formation of new letters is introduced at school and most of the actual practice is done at home. Single stroke manuscript letters are used, and cursive is introduced part-way through 2nd grade.
